Useful Hints for Removals
Compare a few companies to see what you are going to get for your money, and that they carry goods in transit insurance not just vehicle insurance. Removal vehicles are 30ft long so take steps to ensure that space is available outside your home. Try not to use or overfill large boxes as they may be unliftable or at least awkward especially when packing books records files or canned goods... Have a little thought for the removal man.
If moving local, don't eat your way through the deep freeze leave it full and switched on. Drawers need two men to lift them so leave them full. We can take the drawers out if need be. Save money by not using wardrobe cartons for all clothes. Except for very delicate items i.e. wedding/evening dresses etc, put a bin liner over a handful of goods which we will hang on the rails in our van.
We will dismantle anything you want but we may need the special tools it took to build it. Check with the owners of your new home that they didn't need to do anything drastic to get large items into the house. You may have to remove doors, windows, gates, banisters etc.
Take gas electric and water readings and make sure the owners leave all keys. Garage, shed etc. Take precautions to keep your carpets clean especially if raining or it's a muddy new build. Tell us if there is anything which may need more than the usual two men, pianos, sheds, safes etc.
Provision should be made to have neither pets nor children wandering about, don't forget the men will be walking backwards and often unsighted so we do not want to hurt anything or anyone.
Packing the kettle and biscuits is a common mistake made by thankfully few customers.
Useful Hints for Storage
If possible visit the facility you are going to use or at least do not use ones with obvious home addresses which means they are using someone else's warehouse which you should avoid.
Begin your packing in good time starting with things rarely used, taking the opportunity to consider a few trips to the charity shops, with those "that we come in handy one day items that never did. Over a coffee think of things you may need in the months to come that you really don't want to empty your containers to fins: passports, insurance documents, winter clothing, bikinis etc.
Wrap all goods well in bubble wrap tissue, blankets or point out anything you fell should be treated with greater attention. Our insurance covers well packed goods NOT boxes that rattle noisily.
Remember you must give a reasonable amount of notice that you want your goods back. (at least a few days) and your account must be paid up in full before release of the goods is given.
Give thought to the following
Notifying doctor, dentist and hospital of your new address;
Also inform nursery school, playgroup;
All utilities such as gas electric, water, along with telephone internet mobile sky (organise dish removal) need your new address.
Unfortunately the tax man will need to know as well as the dss, the bank, building society, credit and store card people and last but not least your family and friends may now want to know where you live.
Speak to the Royal mail to have your post sent on from your previous address.
Two (three) bits of advice from a company that has seen it all.
1. Find out what time the previous owners are intending leaving your new home and tell them you expect them to keep to that time. Beware if they say they are doing it themselves.
2. Most bad experiences on the day are not of the removal peoples doing. The blame more than often lies with the solicitor. Keep them on their toes and contact them regularly to the point of annoyance
3. Don't pack that kettle.
The hints and advice above come from many years of undertaking removals from all types of dwellings for all types of people to all manner of destinations. If you don't choose this company we wish you the best of luck with the company you have chosen and may your day go well.
